GlaxoSmithKline’s Synflorix garners WHO approval
by Matthew Dennis
Last Updated:November 06, 2009 00:56

GlaxoSmithKline announced that it garnered WHO approval for Synflorix, which is the first for a vaccine against pneumococcal disease.

The agency awarded prequalification for global use of a one-dose vial of the vaccine, which will allow UN agencies to purchase the compound on behalf of developing countries.

Synflorix received approval in the EU earlier this year, where it is indicated for use in infants and children from six weeks to two years of age to provide protection against invasive pneumococcal disease and acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The vaccine is approved in over 40 countries, including Canada and Australia.
