FDA approves new use for Wyeth's Tygacil antibiotic
by Mark Todoruk

Wyeth announced that the FDA granted expanded approval for Tygacil (tigecycline), as a treatment for adults with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) caused by susceptible strains of indicated pathogens.

The drugmaker said the approval was based on results from two studies, which compared Tygacil to levofloxacin in patients hospitalised with CABP. The studies showed comparable cure rates for the two treatments. Wyeth's antibiotic has previously been approved in the US to treat adults with complicated skin and skin structure infections, as well as complicated intra-abdominal infections.
